This is me this past winter doing, of all things, underwater Christmas tree decorating. The water was about 4 degrees, but when you live in BC you take what you can get in terms of free diving. It's not that much warmer in summer anyways... Note the "Bare Arctic" 7mm wetsuit. Enough said.
Free diving (snorkelling really) is another of my expensive extra curriculars, along with sailing and of course, photography. I'm happiest when I'm either on the ocean, in it, or photographing it.
Glad to be a member of NPN.

What part of BC ? I LOVE BC and just spent 2 weeks there with the loons at Lac Le Jeune.

I agree that snorkelling should not involve ice! Though there are so many interesting things underwater to see up here that taking advantage of the great visibility that can often only be found in the heart of winter is just too tempting to give up. In the somewhat warmer summer months our seas can be compared to pea soup with the green blooms of plankton. Better to get a little chilly and be able to see clearly!
The underwater tree decorating is an annual tradition that the apneist club does in West Vancouver every December. They sink a tree, decorate it, and then drag it back out of the water. People are strange.
We are in Maple Ridge, but keep our sailboat in West Vancouver. I'm originally from Vancouver Island though. You are in San Fran? Do you ever bring the boat up this way?
