Cave's Mist
The dramatic difference in air temperature has kept this cave shrouded in a constant mist the two times I've been there. Though this photo contains no objects receiving direct sunlight, the beautiful day outside provides a lot of brightness right at the mouth. But this cave angles steeply down, and get really dark really fast. When it simultaneously get quite shallow, there are precious few positions to photograph the way I usually do.
This photo goes against my norm in several ways. First, I don't usually photograph so close to the opening, and I also usually use a polarizing filter. I'm trying to reduce reflections in most of my cave photography, but conditions in this cave forced me to embrace them. Additionally, this is the first time I've tried stitching multiple frames with a wide angle lens inside a cave. The distortion in each image was as severe as I expected, but the software really did a wonderful job on the finished product.
If a place like this is hard for you to wrap your head around, I posted a short video on my blog that relates the experience of finding such a subject. You can watch it

I got to thinking after some of the recent talk of Galen Rowell and the impact that adding a figure has on a scene, that this would be a great candidate for a "man in nature" style shot. I can imagine a foggy silhouette of a person holding an ice axe and a helmet near the entrance would work very well here.
