Raining Pollution

Air Pollution is a big problem on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, as can be seen here at Port Alberni Harbour. Heavy Industry like paper mills provide needed employment, but a large dose of pollution as well. Such a pristine environment (we go there to photograph flowers, eagles, whales, lighthouses, etc.), but now you can smell the air - not good. Touch choices for struggling economies.

While it saddens me to see beautiful natural areas ruined by development, industry, shore hardening, etc. I must point out that the "pollution" seen in this photo is almost certainly nothing more than steam (based on the fact that it's white, and that a paper mill would require a lot of water/heat). This is not to say that massive amounts of water vapor spewing into the air can't cause problems, but it's pretty harmless compared to all of the emissions from the cars and boats that burn gas simply driving around "enjoying" nature in areas like this.

Very good point. Shows my ignorance on the emissions in the photo - but the area definitely had a negative "smell" in the air, which influenced my perception. It is true that we are all contributors to our pollution problems. Thanks for the info.

janice - pretty depressing but therein lies the dilemma: i am certain that the engineers could have produced system to reduce such pollution but given i) governments don't make industries do this and ii) it costs money so the companies will not do it voluntarily, we have this outpouring of stuff - well illustrated here!

Well, i have to somewhat disagree with Luke: the fact that it is white does not necessarily equate to "harmless steam". I lived near a paper mill for several years, and the emissions can definitely be quite toxic and smelly! But i do agree with his car emissions point as well.
A very good photo, although i think it might have been stronger with a wider view (showing more of the surrounding environment)

Sharp, clear message;very nice. Cleaner, less damaging systems can be built. There's proven technology. But it increases operating costs and lowers margins. In a global economy, competing with countries that care even less about their environment, that's a problem. Until all countries include environmental costs in their manufacturing expense, the dilemma you describe will continue. :frown:

Luke, Paper mills also use a lot of chemicals, sadly.
This is likely the objectionable odor, and certainly is pollution in the truest sense.
