EPA 2009 - First Place Winner - Macro/Close-up Gallery

This is another shot of the millipede Narceus americanus, the same creature I posted on Monday. It is curled up in its defensive position, exposing only its armor plate. I broke away from my usual “documentary” mode of portraying whole organisms in their habitats because I liked the graphic design of this closer view.

I only got a few frames before some sunlight hit the critter, and he uncurled and began moving surprisingly quickly around the forest floor.

Canon 50D
Sigma 150 mm. Macro
0.4 sec. @ f/11; ISO 100
Feisol Tripod; Mirror up; Release

Wayne,
Fabulous image and detail! This is a winner. Would have loved to see an even larger image... this should make a great print. Well done.

Wayne - This is great! The nested spirals are hypnotic. The blue is wonderful touch of contrasting color. It is also really sharp.

Excellent graphic. Up in our north coast redwood forests there seem to be very few insect species on the forest floor except for zillions of millipedes.

Most impressive capture of this "critter" Wayne. clarity, composition and color spot on. I thought is was the shell of a sea creature of some sort from the thumbnail. All the little leg became visable when i expanded the image. WOW!!!

Wow! That's awesome, Wayne. Nice capture of lines and curves. I never realized a millipede was this colorful. It's cool how macro photography brings this stuff out, and you did an amazing job with this image.

Sensational photograph, Wayne! Color, detail, design– this has got to be a winning abstract! The more spectacular to me because I'm not big on bugs and this proves that they can be gorgeous as an art form! Documentary is cool, but compared to something like this? Wow, I love this!
