Photographed in southern Texas, just north of the Mexican border, last April. This image (as well as many others) was made after waiting on her in a blind for 13 days. She arrived at prime-time, just minutes before sunset. This shot will appear in the ICF's (images of 2008) coffee table book, due to be on sale in Oct. of 2009.

40D
600mm
full frame

C&C welcome.

Hi Josh,

Great timing, very nice golden lighting, and very nice detail - there's lots to like here. I recall a similar post from you from months ago...and, if memory serves me correctly, I think I prefer this one (but I would feel like quite the idiot if it was the same shot). As with the previous shot, my "perfect world" comment would be that I wish that the out-of-focus "little island" wasn't sitting in the water in front of the cat (I don't find it very distracting, it's just that the golden water and reflection would be SO NICE if it wasn't there).

Thanks for sharing this and congrats on it's inclusion in the coffee table book - well done!

Brad

Brad, thanks for your critique. I agree with what you said. No, this isn't the same shot, but it is similar.

Outstanding capture! You will remember this capture forever after having to sit in blind for that long and finally get that pefect shot where all the elements come together in a moment like this. Most do not have any idea how hard these small cats are to capture. They are virturually invisible in any brush that is knee high or taller, and naturally shy and sneaky. watering holes where they come to hunt and drink are about the only place one has any chance of seeing one for more than a fleeting moment. Well done! The tongue is a great touch... :toast: :jump: :toast:

This is a great shot. As already pointed out light and contact with the subject is real good. I do however find the hard shadow behind the head a bit distracting. The out of focus "island" in the foreground isnt a big deal to me.

All the best

Josh, this is excellent. I don't find the oof foreground distracting in this image because of the distance of it from you. I agree with Anthony about how hard it is to shoot one of these. I have never seen one in the wild to date...would love to, but no chance yet. You show great patience by sitting in a blind for 13 days. :toast:

Nice image. Great to see a wild cat instead of the usual game farm animals. Looks like your persistance payed off.

Good shot! The out of focus foreground is a minor distraction but heck you got a very nice photo of a wild bobcat! Not many have one as nice as this.

Thirteen days is a long wait, but it certainly paid off in the end. The tongue and eyes make it for me. Congrats on the book and this fine image to put in it.

Stunning shot Josh! Must be a bit frustrating to read critiques that you couldn't have done anything about considering you were in a blind. In that situation, when the magic moment arises like the tongue hitting the water you graciously accept what you have in front of you, regardless of our perceived flaws of nature.

Beautifully presentation of a rare and wild creature.

Outstanding! I can't say enough about the timing, not only in the sense of the light but in the subjects pose. 13 days, yikes. Payed off in my opinion :toast:

Wow, 13 days.. I assume that's not like, continuously sitting in the blind for 13 days? Anyways, fantastic image, the light and look are super.

Hi Josh,

Congrats on being the "Pick of the Week" in the Fauna Gallery. While "difficulty of capture" alone doesn't make a great image (otherwise we'd all be in bathyscaphs in the Mariana Trench photographing bacteria 7 miles below the surface of the Pacific), you managed to combine a capture of an elusive species both with fabulous light and with impeccable timing - mid-drink and with tongue out!

Your 13 days in a blind have paid off in a great image! It was an honour to select your image as "Pick of the Week"...

Cheers...

Brad
