Towers of the Moon
by Ian Plant
South Coyote Buttes, Vermillion Cliffs, AZ
This is a blend of three exposures, one short exposure for the moon; one 30-second exposure for the sky, clouds and stars; and one exposure of several minutes for the hoodoos. Since the moon was behind the hoodoos, I lit them using a small white-light LED lantern placed about 40-50 feet away. The soft glow cast by the lantern really picked up the native red color of the hoodoos (I did not use any filters on the lantern). In the bigger version you can see the stars better than in the smaller one (well, duh).

So let me get this right. The moon and clouds are one shot. You waited for the moon to set and then shot the stars and buttes?
BTW, when I saw the thumbnail, I expected a continuation of the alien joke. Oh well.

Alex, you are correct, I should have continued with the alien jokes! But alas I am fresh out of funny this weekend -- to much shooting and traveling in the past two months, my brain has turned to mush. Actually, I feel more tired than I should be -- perhaps during my nights in the field the aliens have been abducting me . . . that might explain why I've been walking around saying "klaatu barada nikto" to everyone . . .
