Crater Lake

I spent most of last week snowshoeing around Oregon's Crater Lake. These clouds drifted in as a winter storm approached, creating quite a spectacle at sunset. When the storm finally plowed into the Cascades I was still 13 or so miles out....It was a definitely a struggle hiking out.

C & C Welcome
Thanks for looking

This is a great picture Tyson. The FG snow provides a nice lead in, and the reflection is killer. I'd love to see it bigger.

My goodness Tyson that is the most glorious shot of Crater lake I have ever seen just awe inspiring. The glorious suffusion of soft pink and blue even on the foreground snow is handled with beautiful subtlety and your composition is wonderful. Heroic shot.

I agree with Ian. This is the best image that I have seen from the area!!! The lighting is perfect and not oversaturated. Kudos!!!

Sweet! You should get a lot of praise on this one. My favorite part of the image is the foreground snow. It's amazing how beautiful snow can look with the right lighting.

I love the light, color and reflection. It's a fantastic shot, but part of me wishes that there was a bit more to the view on the left...small nit...really wonderful otherwise! :toast:

Thanks for your comments! This was a very exciting image to make. Jim, I made several frames that show more snow on the left, but it looked a little out of balance. While composing the scene, I felt the slightly off center position of Wizard Island - which I feel is an important part of the composition - was stronger than one that places it more to the right. It will be interesting to hear what others think.

Looks like you're trying to fight Adamus for the best of the place, this is super! I'm not completely satisfied by the composition though, for me there's too much empty space on the left. The visual 'flow' stops at the two foreground rocks on the left, and everything further to the left is unnecessary for me. I'm also a little troubled by the horizon being dead center. In short, I would take a 2:3 horizontal crop, keeping the bottom right corner with 1/3 of the comp being sky. This puts wizard island in the middle, but it works better for me that way. Hope that's helpful, this has a lot going for it!

Great shot, I am not quite sure with the composition though. After reading Floris' comment, I have to say that his crop suggestion would really improve the shot, imo.

Thanks Floris. The visual flow you describe it something I fought with while making the image. Here is a cropped version.

Wonderful shot Tyson! The repost addresses the issue I had with the original - a bit too much weight given to the snow in the LL. Great delicate strokes of light you've captured here. The colours are very impressive and the way you've handled them in post they don't look overcooked. I really like it. You were obviously limited by the environment you found yourself in but if I had one wish for what is a really strong image that would be for the camera height to be a few feet higher. That way the weight of the LL could play less in the comp and Wizard island would have a bit more separation from the reflected peak. Super image.

Looks like an amazing sunset and a fantastic place from which to view it, Tyson. The re-post is a slight improvement on an already gorgeous photo. The subtle touches of color on the FG snow are a nice touch. Great work! :toast:

Inspiring Shot! Sky is wonderful w/blend of reds and evening hues. No doubt, cropped version is my preference....balance is better. I am drawn to look at the deep blue water area...it stands out against the lighter water reflections ...esp compared to left side...and I assume such a mix of tones was equally pronounced to your natural eye. But, if not...would lightening a hair help the dark center along w/darkening other portions of water to bring them a smidge closer?? That is such a great shot...definately one that will have staying power in your portfolio. Ken S

Great shot of Crater Lake. Hiking around the rim in winter must be really hard work - I thought only Marc Adamus has the dedication to do so! The composition is very strong, the mentioned flow is there and I do not mind the left part. I do not think it stops something. Everthings coherently for me.

I think this has some elements of a truly epic photo. If it were mine I would tweak the colors with levels adjustments or other techniques to make them pop more. The top part of the sky is just a hair dark for my taste, undoubtedly due to the grad. That can be overcome with PS work too. Overall your dedication and patience paid off.

This has the potential to be one of the better Crater Lake shots. For my tastes, the crop helps, but could benefit from the top half of the sky being cropped out as well. IMO, even though the sky is kinda nice, it is drawing away from the lake, peaks, and reflection... Which is the key to this shot. I think if you take off half of the sky, you'd have yourself a real winner. :toast:

Your hard work and dedication really paid off here. The cropped version does give this a bit more balance.
I agree with Jay that a touch more contrast in the skies would really make this pop even more.

Stunning shot, 2nd post works much better. You given the thought of maybe just bringing the luminosity of the red sky up a little. Its ok as is, but i think the light falling around the scene presents a little lighter, and more luminous red?
Well done :)

Thank you everyone for your helpful feedback. You've definitely given me some great ideas on how I might improve this image. Your thoughts are very much appreciated!

At this point I'm still leaning towards a crop to the left that is somewhere in between my original post and repost. A more significant crop to the sky might be in order as some have suggested.

Really a nice shot of Crater Lake.... I like the placement of the island but I think there is too much sky and not enough lead in lines with the FG snow. With the sky getting as much of the frame, it should have been more dramatic to "earn" all that realestate. Still an awesome shot.

Marc....100 inches...must have been hard work, especially if it was a solo hike which i'm sure it was. I had to slog through closer to a couple of feet, most of it being fairly wet...uugh! Winds were strong and I couldn't see much on the last day.

Tyson,

A little late to the party, but this is one spectacular image of Crater Lake. I think you've treated the colors perfectly; this is simply gorgeous.

While I can agree somewhat with the previous crop suggestions, I think this works wonderfully as presented. And the reason it works for me is because of the delicate light and patterns in the foreground snowdrift. Normally, it might be too heavy, but the light really makes the LLC special, IMHO.

This should make a magnificent print.
