Svalbard 2004/ #1
by Jasper Doest
Hi all....
I'm in the high artic right now and I really wanted to share this photograph with you. The area is so remote...it really feels like being in the middle of nowhere and it was a great surprise when I saw these 2 people walking up the glacier. Well...enjoy the summer out there.

9 commentsWhat an extraordinary place. You’ve done a great job of capturing the snow, peak, hikers, and sky. The histogram must have an interesting curve on this one! How has the 10D been performing under these conditions?

Like Nathan, I'd love to see this as a pano, with 1/3 cropped of the sky (the light bits).
Nice job on the exposure and a great shot. I have a few questions. . .
1) Which Island was this taken on?
2) Are one of these guys carrying a rife over their shoulder as they should?
3) have you learn the 360 rule for Photgraphers on these islands?
(Look around 360 degrees before and after every shot to insure the white furry beasts are not in your blind spot!)
Thanks for the comments...to answer your questions...this was taken on the Island of Spitsbergen, near Longyearbyen. And yes we are always walking with a rifle...and so did they....hahaha...thanks for the tip on those white furry animals...we'll probably never see one as they are further up north but you'll never know.
Cheers,
Jasper
This is really a marvelous shot. The light and composition are so good! The thing that really strikes me here is the near-absence of colours. There are just some very faint hues in the sky, but that's it. That makes the mood very special here.
Great work my friend! Can't wait to see your whole collection when you get home :)
Best of luck!
PS. summer here doesn't look like much.. plenty of rain ;). I'd rather spend summer up north ;)
