Blue on Goatsbeard

Not sure of an ID, but a Blue nonetheless. I must admit I am completely jacked about finding some bugs in the past week. This one was fairly patient and allowed much closer inspection - but I really like the comp here.

Any ideas on a positive ID?

Looks like one of the blues but I can't tell which one. I know you did an excellent job photographing it and it appears to be a very nice specimen.

I agree..it does look like one of the 'blues' - but not one we get here in my part of Texas... a fine specimen indeed!! Excellent composition and the flowers really add to the image. Well done!

Will,

I'm with Randy and Michael on the ID, definetly doesn't look like a hairstreak, well nothing like the one down here. You did a great job on the image. Man, this is really sharp and with a pleasing background. I like that you were able to get down low and get eye level, makes the image all the more appealing. Good job, what lens did you use?

Hi Will - "One of the Blues" - that's as close as I can get. With or without a definitive ID, this is one gorgeous image!

Will, one of the nicest things about this picture is that it gives us a good clue on the relative size of this butterfly. I second all that has been said about this one too.

Very neat composition and really sharp.

Will,

No matter what the ID turns out to be, this is one killer image. Well done. You are turning me green with envy.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Sorry for not listing some of the specs. Same typical stuff. Ronnie, I was moving in on this (first image of about 15) so I had a 105mm, polarizer and a 36mm tube. Taken about 11 am, under changing clouds/sky. F/16, 200 ISO at 1/25 sec. After getting too close the little one flew away.

Will, I too, like this shot a lot. I will venture a guess that this could be Celastrina argiolus (Spring Azure) but I'm not too good at identifying insects. I just looked at a small photo in my BF book that looks more or less like this. BTW, the BF book to which I refer is "The Butterflies of North America - A Natural History and Field Guide" by James A. Scott. Page 396 (#392) refer to color plate #38 which is what I'm going by. I hope this starts others who are better than I am on a hunt for your ID. Mike Stolting

Might be a Breenish Blue according to my Audubon butterfly guide. Anyway, a truly beautiful shot in every respect. Way to go!
