European Brown Bears

This picture of a female and young cub was taken in finland back in June. It was a great experience to see this large predator at such close quarters.

Canon 1D MK11, 500mm lens, 1/60, F4, ISO 400.

Danny, I like this a lot, the reflections and color of the vegetation at the water's edge. My only nit is the light parts of the bears seem to be a bit hot. You didn't post specs so can't comment on that. Overall, though, a great photo. :toast:

On my monitor the highlights look spot on perfect. I love the partial rim lighting effect. Your timing or luck was also perfect in catching a great pose, with the big female alert and forward looking, while the youngster offers the headturn. This is worthy of a big print! :toast:

Hi Danny,

Well done. From my own experience of pixelating bears I'd say the highlights are spot on - those blond facial highlights are almost pure white and, similar to Lon, I like the rim-lighting effect.

This may sound funny, but one of my favourite elements in this image are the orange-coloured plants immediately below the sow. They add a beautiful splash of colour and, in my opinion, dramatically enhance and already strong image.

Thanks for sharing this fine image...

Brad

Danny,

nice to see also some "European Bears" around here

I like the moody setup of the image, and you used and managed the light conditions very well.

Hello Everyone

Wow thanks for your nice comments Guys

Don

I was very close at some points as I was in a small hide waiting for the bears to arrive and sometimes they just walked straight past.

Great capture Dan! Awesome reflection. Poses, light, it all works! I'd like to see a bit of the top taken off and cropped as aslight pano. But that's just me. I tend to elimate what's not important and work from there. Regardless, mat it, frame it and sell it! It should bring in some bucks! It's a beautiful shot!

Wow I was really pleased to get a picture of the week but to get a front cover on this fine site with all these wonderful pictures posted on the different forums is amazing and I am so proud.
So big thanks to Brad and Cay-Uwe for choosing it in the first place and an even bigger thanks for Jim for picking it for the front cover

A wonderful image, Danny. I was very lucky to have experienced close up viewing like this of many bears during my two years in Alaska. Congratulations on this image being selected for the monthly cover shot. :toast:

Exellent photo! I just received a 500 f/4 yesterday and will be using it primarily on my Mark II. If this is what the potential for that combo is, I'm even more excited than I was before!
