To further promote the appreciation of our natural world among the general public, the Nature Photographers Network™ will be conducting its first annual Nature Appreciation Day on Sunday, October 4, 2009. The theme of this year’s event is "What Nature Photography Means to Me" - why we enjoy nature photography and how focusing on the beauty of nature through the camera's viewfinder provides an escape from the stress of daily living.

Photos captured on that day by NPN members under this theme will be posted in a special gallery, which will appear in the Gallery menu as "NAD 2009." The gallery will be open from October 4 through October 18 for members to post their photos and will remain open permanently for viewing and comment.

In keeping with the 2009 nature appreciation theme, when posting photos in the NAD 2009 gallery members should explain in their own words how being out in nature to capture their photo provided an escape from the stress of daily living. For example, the description can include the enjoyment of being in a particular location, the joy of observing the subject or scene through the viewfinder, the satisfaction of printing the photo or sharing it with others on the NPN site, etc.

Along with promoting the Nature Photographers Network™ Nature Appreciation Day on the NPN website, a press release is available for members to submit to their local newspapers in advance of the day. The press release encourages readers to "get out and enjoy nature" on that day and provides a link to the NPN website for additional information. A link to the press release (in PDF) can be found below – we encourage you to submit the PR to your local newspaper!

Please mark Sunday, October 4 on your calendars as our first annual Nature Appreciation Day, which will be conducted rain or shine. Photos taken anytime over that weekend anywhere in the world by NPN members are eligible to be posted in the NAD 2009 Gallery. Plan on getting out - either by yourself or with fellow nature photographers - to enjoy the day and to capture memorable nature photos.

We look forward to your participation!

Cool! We're on a roll!

Jim, may I copy your post and feature it at CANP, or do you plan to post it in the regional group forums?

Thanks, as always, :toast:

Ditto Preston's question..can we copy and post this in the regional forums?

Also...should we get the press release out now, or wait until the date gets closer? If the press release goes out too far in advance, I'm afraid people will forget about it....

Jim, this is a good idea all the way around. Kind of gives me thoughts along the lines of the old "Day in the Life Of" publications from years back now. This should be an excellent time of the year in most areas to benefit from decent weather too.

Yes, please feel free to post this in any of the regional forums!

I think we can start circulating the PR any time from now until just before the date. The ideal window will be mid August to late September.

Thanks to all for your support!

Jim - Can photos on this day be Man & Nature shots or strictly Nature?
Posted by Jim Erhardt on July 28, 2009 at 6:13 PM
Carol, M&N shots are fine!

To reiterate, the goal of this event is to help foster an appreciation of the natural world among the general public. The more value we can place on that, the better!

If anyone is in the north Texas area and wants to meet up with a few other photographers we will be Tandy Hills Park in Fort Worth at sunup on Sunday. See map.

http://www.tandyhills.org/map.htm

We are meeting at the corner of Tandy and View and we will wonder the hills of this nature area looking for signs of an early fall. Then it will be off to Fuzzys Taco Shop near TCU for breakfast.

Nature. Photography. Migas. We have it all planned for Sunday.

Hope to see a few folks join us.
