NPN Members

Thanks for participating in our efforts to assist Duke University Medical with their Oncology research! We will be producing a “prototype” slide show for testing and if it is appropriate we will produce additional DVDs for use in their treatment of cancer patients and research on the effects of patient distraction during the treatment. We have developed image requirements so we can maximize the quality of the slide show, along with submission guidelines to allow you to submit your images online for use in this show.

Image Contents

This will be a prototype show that we will send to Duke Medical and they will test it. Once we understand the results, we will gain information and guidance to produce further shows for their research program. This first show will be a general nature theme and we will welcome a mix of images from all the different types of photography as represented by the critique forums on NPN. If successful, we may produce additional DVDs around themes in the future but for this first effort we want a wide assortment of images. Please keep in mind that the people who view these photos are dealing with a potentially life threatening disease so exercise appropriate judgment in choosing the content of the images you submit.

Image Requirements

The folks at Duke medical currently have goggles with SVGA resolution, which is 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. When developing a slide show to be run on a screen or a projector the goal is to have the image fill the screen of the target playback device. The ideal in this case would be for all images to be exactly 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. A complication to this is the aspect ratio of the image you get from your camera will likely not match the screen aspect ratio exactly. For 35mm format, the height would be about 2/3’s of the width of the image. This means that if we try and fill the 800 x 600 pixel screen we would have to change the aspect ratio of the image resulting in “House of Mirrors” like effects to your image. If you set the horizontal resolution of a 35mm format image to 800 pixels the height would automatically default to about 533 pixels. Therefore we want to maximize the longest side of your image and let the other dimension “float” to the appropriate resolution to maintain the original aspect ratio. Follow the instructions below and if you find that your image exceeds the 800 x 600 pixels on either dimension please contact the address below to get advice.

We also want you to include a copy write mark on each photo to specifications, which we have outlined below. We will only accept JPEG files of 125kb or less for inclusion in this slide show.

  • Horizontal or landscape images set to 800 pixels wide
  • Vertical or portrait images set to 600 pixels high
  • Only set the longest edge of your image as outlined above and allow to other dimension to automatically adjust to maintain the aspect ratio.
  • Submit image only. Remove any frames or background you may have around the image - we will use a black background in the slide show so frames are not necessary.
  • Add your name with the copywrite symbol to the lower right corner of the image –
    • Use 8 pt Arial font
    • Based on the colors in the lower right color of your image please use either one of the two specified light or dark grey colors listed below .
    • Use light grey for dark images: Set color code to R 202 B 202 G 205
    • Use dark grey for light images Set color code to R 60 B 60 G 61
  • Since this image is intended to be viewed via electronic means, you may want to set the color space to sRGB.
  • Save the file as a JPG file at 123 kb or smaller.

Questions about these image requirements can be sent to Jim Deasy at duke_submission@comcast.net.
