My love of nature photography was born from a love of nature and art that developed at a very early age. My first paintings were recreations of nature calendar photographs. I continued to draw and paint through grade school and high school, and in College my appreciation of art widened while studying fine art under renowned print-master, Dan Welden. I considered continued studies in art or music, but my fear of starving led me to Law School instead. During my short law career I concentrated on writing and performing music, and largely forgot about the visual arts. When I finally quit my law career and returned to school to study meteorology, my appreciation for art and nature was reawakened by the photos that I took with a point-n-shoot camera that I carried with me on many hikes and climbs in the Adirondacks of New York, the Cascades of Washington, and finally the Redwood Coast of Northern California. By 2005, I had accumulated enough photographs of the Northern California wilderness that I published a book of landscapes, and upon moving to Colorado my love of mountain and wilderness photography continued to grow as I explored the many mountains ranges of the Colorado Rockies. I see nature photography as a means of capturing brief moments of time, moments of profound beauty and discovery, so that we can continue to appreciate these moments long after they have passed us by. Like many of the other nature photographers here at NPN, I also see nature photography of a way to express my passion for preserving the natural environment, and hopefully inspire others to share in a concern for conservation and preservation.
