Greetings from the boreal forest, all. Steve Foss here, co-moderator of the Environmental Photojournalism board on NPN. While a hobbyist at photography since a teen, I came into photography professionally through a 14-year newspaper career, serving readers in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota at daily and weekly newspapers. There have been many state newspaper association awards along the way for writing, editing, reporting, photography and page design. My mate, Lisa, and I are proudest that we were key parts of the team at the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1998. We left newspapers after moving here to Ely, though we keep our hands into editing and design by teaming up to edit and publish books for private and professional clients. After moving here, I turned my attention to immersing myself in the woods I have loved all my life, and to guiding and teaching others about photography and the natural world around Ely. The bulk of my business comes from weddings and guided photo excursions, both of which are deeply satisfying. While most of my photo publication involves smaller regional magazines, I have been published in Bird Watcher’s Digest, Birder’s World and National Geographic Adventure, and have written and designed the book Lake Vermilion: A Multispecies Fishing Guide to Northern Minnesota’s Crown Jewel. All that being said, it’s nature photography that fills my soul. And let’s be honest here. In some ways photography is but an excuse. In the same way a German shepherd dog needs a job to justify being a dog, photography is what takes me out into the boreal forest in all seasons, where my heart is most full of creation. Laying flat out on the forest floor without moving — and watching, listening and smelling the woods come back to life around me. Well, if there’s more to life than that, and to sharing it with other photographers, I don’t want to know about it.
