Hard-packed surfaces are usually much easier to traverse than soft sand - as long as it doesn't rain. This type of surface can collect water and form some pretty impressive puddles, once again making ground clearance a high priority for any vehicle taken off road. In this case, I hugged the edge of the puddle to avoid the deep center area.
